What is Hamas?

It is a Palestinian fundamentalist organization consisting of Sunni-Islamist, Dawah, social service wing, and a military wing. Hamas has been the governing authority of the Gaza Strip since the takeover of that area in 2007.During this period it fought several wars with Israel.

Ideology and Aim of HAMAS

Hamas aims to liberate Palestine from the Israeli occupation by resisting it.
Hamas acts independently of other Palestinian organizations, to liberate all of Palestine from what they describe as Zionist occupation, and to achieve the rights of the Palestinian people that were robbed by the occupation, and it considers itself part of the movement of a project of national liberation.

  • The year 2006 Hamas won a surprise victory over Fatah in the elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council. Hamas got control of the Gaza Strip, while a Fatah-led emergency cabinet had control of the West Bank.
  • The year 2011 an agreement was signed in Cairo on May 4, Hamas and Fatah officials announced that the two sides had reached a reconciliation agreement in negotiations mediated by Egypt.
  • The year 2014 Hamas and Fatah agreed to the formation of a new PA cabinet consisting of nonpartisan ministers.
